SC - RE: Louisana's Loose Liquour Laws and "Period-ness" (long)

In response to Bear:
Louisiana was the last state to raise he drinking age from 18 to 21;
Whether Louisiana or Wyoming actually holds this title is a matter of
semantics. Much like Wyoming, the Federal government threatened to cut off
federal highway funds. Louisiana responded that the made more money off of
18 to 20 year old tourists than from the highway funds. The federal govt.
threatened to sue. Louisiana enacted the law (I'm unsure, but I would
believe it was _before_ Wyoming), but wrote the law so that it didn't start
to take effect for one year AND the drinking age was raised only one-year
per year (supposedly to "grandfather" people who were already legally
drinking). The result: Louisiana was the last state to implement _21_ as
the legal drinking age.

>>Didn't the legislature drop it back to 18? I vaguely remember a 60
Minutes piece on that.
IIRC the 60 minutes piece was done during the "grandfathering" phase.
 Currently the drinking age is 21, but it is tacitly not enforced in
tourist areas (primarily the Vieux Carre' in New Orleans). Every once in a
while something happens (e.g. a notorious DWI accident) and they will
rigorously enforce the law....for a few weeks.
>>Many years ago, I took advantage of that age difference...
MANY people did.

Back on topic:
Months ago, I began compiling, for my own use, the various uses of the word
'period' on the list. With the (surprising) success of my first endeavor
on the SCA-cooks list (the "Cheese Chart" posted in August), I was
encouraged to strive further. I edited my material and produced the
following. I therefore put forth for your comment, insult, amusement and
ridicule the following "Period-ness Chart":
========================================================================
=================
Artifact: an antique; something that actually existed during the time
period in question. Jugs of wine found onboard a tenth century shipwreck
would be an artifact.
Rigorously Period: an exaggeration, used to emphasis the attention to
detail in a period item. "Uther's feast was so rigorously period, I expect
that he insisted that his assistant cooks only speak Old English when in
the kitchen."
Period: an item that is made following a process used during the time
period in question; deviations from the original process are only allowed
for health or safety reasons. This category implies the process has been
successfully reconstructed; Recipes and inventories (listing ingredients
on hand at one moment of time) are often cited as being useful in
reconstructing the process. A mead brewed according to the process used
during the time period in question, but substituting a modern stainless
steel kettle for the lead cauldron originally used, is period.
Conjectural: an item that was made following known portions of a process
used during the period in question; it is implied that portions of the
process and qualities of the original product are unknown. A sauce made
from a recipe in which the ingredients are listed, but quantities are not,
would likely be conjectural. Also, note, if two recipes were combined, it
is likely the result would be conjectural.
Simulation: an item that was made to appear during normal use, to human
senses, as a period item, but was made using a process that was not used
during the time period in question. This implies that the qualities of the
period item are known. Items that fall under the "ten-foot rule" are most
often simulations. An example would be an ale that looks, tastes, etc.
like a period ale, but was made using closed fermentation and dried malt
extract.
Peri-oid: a term, often used in a derogatory manner, to describe an object
created by a process that COULD have existed in the period in question but
likely did not, or vaguely resembles a period object. Blue Jeans, T-tunics
made from synthetic materials and commercial hotdogs are Peri-oid.
Societal: items that have little or no connection to the time in question,
but hold an important role in the SCA. The terms "feast-o-crat" and "stick
jock", the tradition of cloven fruit at weddings and the form of
illuminated awards are societal.
Mundane: items associated with modern processes. Bud Light and Over
Stuffed Baked Potatoes.
========================================================================
==================
The term "...the time in question..." is used since the degree of
period-ness (is that actually a word?) depends on the situation. A dish
that is period for 15th Century Venice may not be period for 6th century
Iceland.

I hope that these definitions, at least, spark useful discussion. If I
have erred, and you do not find them useful (even as a negative example) I
apologize for the waste of bandwidth.

I eagerly await you replies.
