If there is absolutely no professional help to be found, you could try to
keep it clean, yourself, but it is a really messy, filthy job if you
don't have the professional sweep's modern equiptment.  It is dangerous;
my son is a professional, and certified.  (Non-certified can be bad)  He
often drops in to tell me about the life threatening conditions he's
found.  Saving lives is the best part of the job to him.  It's not just
the greasy soot that is the problem--a cracked chimney, one that gets
water inside, birds and animal nests, one that lets extreme heat through
to the roof timbers--there are a lot of things you wouldn't know to look
for.  


I'm afraid he doesn't do trans-Atlantic house calls, but do check with
your local fire company.  They will have some good advice for you--and
that goes for everybody on the list.  I don't want to lose ANY of my
'playmates'!
