IIRC, the numbers also signify DIFFERENT copies of the SAME maunscript. Since
printing was not used until late in period, manuscripts were copied by hand.  

For example, a  manuscript entitled 'The Boke of Onyones' might have been
writtten in 1100 C.E. The maunscrpit was copied in 1235 C.E., it becomes in
the eyes of modern scholars, Bk. 10001 while the original might be designated
as Bk. 1000.
