Jump right in.  Don't lurk...ask questions right away.  That's how you learn.
If it makes you more comfortable, remind people that you are new to this so they
take it slow on the responses.

Many of us here are learning.  I'm an experienced cook, but I am still learning
the medieval cooking too.  The only reason I follow alot of this is because I
have helped with feasts, I have cooked for masses mundanely, and I have cooked
(and taught cooking) in primitive settings.  We're not all kitchen stewards with
20 years under our belt, but all of us, even you have something to offer.  I've
even posted recipies that I'm not sure are period if they meet the specs someone
askes for.  Just say that you're not sure it's period...usually, people will
even let you know that.
