Any major supermarket chain should carry grits, both regular and instant. It
should be located in the same section as  oatmeal or other hot cereals
although I have found it beside cornmeal in at least one store. I find it
surprising that you haven't been able to get them in New York City of all
places. :-0 I have found them in the following chain stores> Giant, Weis,
Acme, A&P, Super Duper, Wegmans, and in the food sections of Dollar General
and Walmart. The new discount chains based on southern discount companies such
as the Cannery and Aldie's also carry this product. 

Perhaps seeking out a major food chain when looking for this product the next
time you shop would lead to success. .Also ethnic food shops that cater to
'soul' food will definitely have them, as well as, health food stores that
carry other grains and grainlike products.
