Get out your electric drill, Phillipa...No, squash the almond into a ball
with the other fruit. The egg yolk covers the whole ball. Be sure to
get the spit or skewer through a fairly solid piece of date or fig. When
you quarter the figs, and cut the dates, the fruit will have a stickiness
to the cut sides, which will help hold the whole thing together.

OK, so it says to leave the dates whole, too. See if the figs are sticky
enough. I'm out of figs and almonds. My bank has been bought by another
bank, and invalidated my card!!! No large grocery purchases until snail
mail carries signature cards back and forth! Rats! Or dormice, or
something...

Actually, liking the binding effect of egg white, I'd be inclined to use
the whole egg, beating it. If it wasn't golden enough, I'd let a saffron
thread sit in the egg a while.

Regards,

Allison
