And when my kids made butter at school, they didn't worry about slowly
and
gently agitating the cream as Jasmine describes. They shook it as hard
as
they could until their arms gave out, then passed it to the next kid.
Took a
roomful of second-graders about 20 minutes of enthusiastic agitation to
get
butter. I don't know if they had anything like a marble inside.

Interesting side note. At the beginning of the summer at Cub Scout
Pack meeting, they had dessert in conjunction with "chemical
experimentation". What they did was for each participant (I got one
too!!)put cream and milk and sugar in a jelly jar with a tight fitting
lid, then put the jar in a coffee can with a plastic lid, filled it
with ice and salt, and took the cans out to the parking lot, and
rolled them for about 20 minutes. They got lots of energy spent
(hooray!!) and the cream was agitated as it froze, which made ice
cream. Not exactly a period recipe, but really fun for the cub
scouts! May be a fun experiment for children's activities, only not
cream, but fruit juice for sorbet!
