SC - frumente serving question

I found saffron (Spanish even!) for $1.99 for one of those small plastic
bottles ( I think it was about 1.5 inch high by about .5 inch across) at a
small Middle Eastern store for the feast I just did. It smelled wonderful
and I had people who cook in amazement at my find.

I guess my question here is, "Where does the saffron come for $47/oz. ?"
(meaning country of origin)
