Ras writes some sentiments with which I heartily agree, about not adding to 
the load on the Kitchen Steward, and then writes:

My approach to this is:  I always tell the Autocrat my kitchen crew is one 
person bigger than it really is, just in case a starving student shows up 
who doesn't even have enough for a server's ticket, let alone a feast 
ticket.  I hand him/her an apron, a knife and a pile of veggies, and I feed 
him and send him home with leftovers.  Just as Ras seems to, I also 
remember being a student, and being hungry.  :-)
