SC - gardening question

hello, I'm putting in a garden ( virgin land and all that) we've 
found a woodchuck living in the stone fence out in the yard and I'd 
really rather he didn't eat all those tender young veggys and herbs, 
anyone have any ideas how to keep him out? ( shooting it is not an 
option in this neighborhood) I figured a simple fence probably wasn't 
going to do it.
