Anybody have any idea if this was an import in period?  I don't recall
seeing anything that would lead me to believe that it was used.  Since it
is sometimes bright red, could that be what  makes the Chinese red bean
paste that bright red?  

I guess it could be used in place of meat-based gelatin if making a
vegetarian dish, but I'd like to stay in period.

Thanks for the information, Lilinah.  I'll look for it when I get to an
Oriental market.
