Distilling is a no-no in the US without a special permit to do so BUT brewing

This is true unless you have a very large family. :-)

While previous restrictions allowed only 200 gallons combined production/per
person beer/wine, current PA law allows EACH person 21 or over who lives in a
household to vint 200 gallons of wine and , now, also to brew 200 gallons of
ale/beer. This is a total of 400 gallons per member of the household 21 or
over. For instance, if you have 2 adults, you may produce 400 gallons of wine
AND 400 of gallons of beer/ale for the household.
