Well, sometimes. I had been going by just Stefan as I mentioned in an
earlier message for about a year. Because of my red hair, someone 
suggested Stefan the Red. As my persona was Anglo-Norman, he actually
had suggested Stefan le Rouge. After some research, a lady in my
barony suggested le Rous would be the name in old French. I think
when it went to the herald's office to get registered it was corrected
to li Rous. Oh yes, in modern life my middle name is Stephen, so that
is why I chose Stefan.

So you see a name can come from a variety of places and it can evolve
over time.
