=3E Interestingly=2C I purchased some for cooking a couple weeks ago=2E=
  The only
=3E malmsey available was an American Malvasia Bianca=2E It is a sweet=
 wine a
=3E slight acidic bite=2E It is lighter than port or sherry and I don'=
t believe
=3E it has been fortified=2E

You may be right=3BI'm not a wine authority=2E Andre Simon's _Concise
Encyclopedia of Gastronomy=5F has a section on wines with the following=

entry on malmsey=3A

=22MALMSEY=2C MALVASIA

A sweet fortified wine made in Madeira=2C Cyprus=2C the Canary Islands =
and
other southern vineyards from the Malvasia grape=2C when available=2E

The popularity of thsi wine must have been great=2C in England=2C durin=

latter part of the eighteenth century and the first half of the
nineteenth=2C to judge from the large number of English Wine Labels of =
the
period=2C in various collections=2C which bear its name=2C the spelling=
 of
which appears to have been rather uncertain=2E The follwing renderings
occur=3A Malmsey=2C Malmslay=2C Malvoisie=2C Malvasia=2C Malmsly=2C Mal=
msey=2C
Madeira=2C Malvasia di Madera=2E=22

I notice that the word "Malmsey=22 appears twice in the list at the end=
=3B I
think this is some sort of typo=2C or at least ambiguously worded=2E It=

probably should read "Malmsey=2C Madeira=2C=22 or "Malmsey Madeira=22=2C=
 as a
cognate of the latter "Malvasia di Madera=22=2E
