Chocolate as beverage in English is from the Oxford English Dictionary,
1604. Chocolate confectionery can dates to 1659.
Columbus took some samples of the cacao bean, but he didn`t know how to
use it.
It was Cortes in the court of Moctezuma who discovered the use of
chocolate as afrodisiac and ceremonial drink. The Aztecd didn´t drink
chocolate, they used the cacao beans as coins.
The Spaniards experimented with sugar and chocolate and made the mixture
we know today. The nuns and the ladys from the Colonies, as I posted
before, wrote to their bishops in 1543, to ask them on dispense to drink
it during Lent.

PS: The drinking of chocolate was developed in the continent before it
came to England.
