Here is what the Miriam-Webster says about the word "Tatar." It's amazing
what a person can find by opening a dictionary occasionally. :-)

Ta*tar (noun)

[Persian Tatar, of Turkic origin; akin to Turkish Tatar Tatar]

First appeared 1811

1 : a member of any of a group of Turkic peoples found mainly in the Tatar
Republic of Russia and parts of Siberia and central Asia

2 : any of the Turkic languages spoken by the Tatar peoples

Now it becomes a matter of figuring out what herb was unique this region.
