<<< The word comes from the Mexican
Indian choco, "foam," and alt, "water." >>>

Philip Motley Palmer, Neuweltwoerter im Deutschen (words from the New
World in German), 1939 says, that this etymology is not correct and that
the word comes from the Nahuatl word _chocolatl_ (p. 123). He says:
"Schokolade (...) Speise und Trank von der Frucht des Kakaobaums, wird
unter dem span. Namen chocolate um 1550 in Europa bekannt durch Acosta
(...)". The first German quotation, he gives, is from 1605. There are
many more quotations from 1668 onwards.

Perhaps it would be best to look up the word in the historical
dictionaries of Spanish and Dutch. Comprehensive dictionaries often lead
to interesting sources.

Best,
Thomas
