The Oregonian of 30 November 1999 had a very nice article in the FoodDay
section about the SCA and historical cooking in the Portland OR area. The
article, by Amy Martinez Starke, focussed on the Italian Renaissance Feast held
in conjunction with Triumphs of Oriana (Shire of Dragon's Mist, 6 Nov 1999).
The article (without photographs) is at
httP://www.oregonlive.com/foodday/features/99/11/30/fd_renmain.html
and various links therefrom (for the sidebars and recipes).
The article seemed very positive in its view of the the SCA and the specific
people with whom they spoke. It discussed interesting trivia of historical
cooking (Italian food without tomatoes!), the significant work involved in
researching, redacting, finding obscure ingredients and preparing the feast,
and the interface with the modern world (for example, the need to adapt to
modern cooking methods (at least for this feast) and to follow modern health
codes.)
Many SCA people were quoted: predominantly the feastocrat (Maestra Katerina,
mka Gina Watson-Haley) but also other helpers at the feast, and the Three
Mountains cooking night head (Countess Morwyn of Wye, mka Linda Taylor.)
The article also includes
* photographs
* a brief sidebar about the SCA, including contact information for the branches
in the Rivers Region with particular detail for Dragon's Mist and Three
Mountains
* The full menu for the feast (in a sidebar) and five recipes from the feast.
Check it out!
Zenobia Naphtali mka Leslie Schweitzer
