I just wanted to let you know that the Royal Britich Navy was aware of
and made expeditious use of malt extracts in the Early 18th century. 
Ale stores would sour eventually, leaving the crew beerless and more
likely to mutiny.  They found that this syrupy stuff could be
transported easily and afford more beer per cargo space onboard a
seaward ship.
