Ras quotes something:
> malt [1] (noun)
>
> [Middle English, from Old English mealt; akin to Old High German malz malt,
> Old English meltan to melt]
>
> First appeared before 12th Century
>
> 1 : grain (as barley) softened by steeping in water, allowed to germinate,
> and used esp. in brewing and distilling

Ras, what are you quoting from please? On Dec. 10, Christianna quoted from
the OED, but the earliest date it gave was the 14th century. (I assume the
online version).

Thanks.
