This must be for the jars of saffron in the spice area. At least where I
live, there are little envelopes of saffron hanging near the checkout lines
which are much cheaper - something like $2.50. It is real saffron, it's just
a lot less, and since I find I don't need much (saffron is potent stuff),
that is enough for me. Actually, the one time I did buy it in quantity, it
was still cheaper to buy several envelopes than one jar. Of course, I also
live in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and saffron appears pretty frequently in
their traditional foods.
