Johann, the midrelm chicken guy! LOL! responds:

I just read the first and was about to respond when Ras' reply came up!! 
Gizzards are indeed a heavy muscle usually filled with small stones and 
pebbles, used to grind up food before it passed to the stomach.
Birds have no teeth and so need this organ to 'chew'
