It seems that the root of the Mallow plant which grows in the marshes of Egypt, secretes a sticky sweet substance that, in ancient times, was molded into shapes and eaten. Later the root was dried and then reconstituted to form the sweets. In the 17th? century there was a mallow root shortage so confectioners made a substitute that became the marshmallow we know today. BUT - if the confectioner's were trying to recreate marshmallows then I would assume they would only be happy with a close match. SO fire up the marshmallows...They're Period :)
