SC - Medieval Fast Days

Wolfmom -

There are many fast days in the liturgical year. During the week,
Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday are fast days.

The penitential seasons, Advent and Lent, require fasting every day except
for Sundays and any other approved feast days. Advent's position as a
penitential season waned somewhat as time went on.

Other fast days include Ember days and Rogation days.

Now, most of these fast days are "moveable" rather than "fixed" on the
calendar. Advent is "fixed", because it culminates with Christmas, which
is on a set date each year, as opposed to Easter, which floats around, and
is therefore "moveable".

One place you can look for a better understanding of moveable feasts is:
www.geocities.com/athens/styx5781
and look under Berengaria's "Plain FAQs" for July, 1998.

Do remember that some of these fasting days required you to abstain from
all animal product save fish, while others permitted eggs.

There are some books on calendars and liturgical calendars out there. Most
university libraries should have at least one.
