In the southeastern U.S. vinegar is likely to be available for putting
on french fries, at least in "down home" type resteraunts and barbecue
joints. Or maybe this is just an Eastern NC thing-since the BBQ sauce
is basically vinegar and red pepper flakes and there's always more sauce
for topping the BBQ. I like vinegar better than ketchup. (My daughters,
just to annoy me, insist on dipping their fries in mustard. Or maybe
that's just so I won't snitch their fries.)
I've never seen butter put out for dabbing on hush puppies except for
here in central NC. The idea of putting more fat on a fried food boggles
the mind.
