They are New World. The Europen equivalent would be the hedgehog. Which
although smaller in size has much the same habitat requirements, lifestyle and
diet of the aAmerican groundhog.

BTW, New World isn't automatically 'non-period', it would not be a period food
for European  folks but would be period for Spanish, Portuguese and English
settlers, as well as Amer-Ind persona and possibly Azrec and Peruvian
personas. :-)
