This reminded me,

Barley water (as in e.g. Schwepps Lemon Barley these days) is used in Britain 
to treat inflammation of the bladder (together with an antibx).  The barley 
changes the pH of the urine, making an environment less conducive for growth 
of the bacteria that cause such infections.

In the US cranberry juice is used for the same purpose.
