Actually, it's the book from which the movie is derived.  IIRC, the title is
derived from the "gallant gesture" of the major character joining the
Foreign Legion  to divert suspicion from the other major characters.

Since the French Foreign Legion was not organized until 1831, it is
definitely OOP.
