Trifles, as we know them, were made in the mid-18th century (Hannah Glasse
has a really elaborate "Grand Trifle" in her 1755 Art of Cookery). Trifles
are much older (Elizabethan, at least) but I think they were then sweetened
and spiced cream, warmed or boiled - macaroons and comfits came later. The
light frothiness of the earlier version is probably the origin of the name
(compare flummery, which underwent a reverse change, but that name of course
has a Welsh origin).
