In some parts of the world, larger women are still considered the "ideal
women"....at least by the older generation.  When my hubby  stationed in
Italy, I would get followed around by older men (I've an hourglass
figure...just a bigger hourglass!   56-42-57...with an HH cup) while my
skinnier American counterparts didn't get so much as a look.  Most of the
native Irishmen and Scots that I've met preferred my build to a skinnier
model too.  One commented that he could hug me without being afraid he'd
break me in half.

all from period...the  common perception was that a larger woman/man was
healthier and better off.  Many of the pictures that I've seen show more
padded figures, but not obese with rolls of fat hanging.  I guess it's
all how it's proportioned that counts.
