Both Food in History and the History of Food as well as several other sources
have capsicums being introduced well before 1600 C.E. I would suspect that
they would have been grown in botanical gardens and such at first as were
phaseolus, tomatoes and potatoes. Toussant-Samat's Food in History would be a
good place to start. I think Stefan should have some files dealing withn this
subject also because it has come up numerous times both on this list and
others.
