Paprika is a variety of sweet pepper (actually a mid-range variety between
sweet and spicy).. Sweet peppers were introduced to the Old World in the
1700's by the route of Africa, Arabia and Naples for the most part. One of the
main problems in determining exact introduction dates for a lot of New World
foods is the interaction of the slave trade which confuses west /east and
east/west food dispersle routes. :-(

BTW, capsicuns were so quickly assimilated by African, Arabic and Hindu
cultures (Toussant-Samat quotes 1501-06) that Linnaues mistakenly has all four
hot pepper types originating in Calcutta, India. :-0
