Regarding the subject if you are so disposed check out "The Road to Eleusis,
Unveiling the Secret of the Mysteries" by R. Gordon Wasson, Albert Hofmann
and Carl A.P. Ruck, 1978, A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book, Harcourt Brace
Jovanovich, Inc. NY,
ISBN 0-15-177872-8 This work, sub-titled Ethno-mycological Studies No. 4,
is an extensive investigation of the role of ergot in the Eleusinian
Mysteries. The authors are "a dedicated ameteur ethnomycologist", the
Swiss chemist who first synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide, and a
professor of Greek at Boston University whose special background is in Greek
ethnobotany. While the Mysteries predate our period of interest this
investigation of them does shed some light upon egrot related incidents
which occurred within period.
