I can respond to this about a modern society where modern fast food is not
prevalent, rather than medieval society, but I think it still has some
validity.  

Hungary has one of the highest rates of heart disease in Europe today.  While
there is a good number of American fast food establishments in Hungary, they
have only sprung up over the past 10 years or so and still remain a novelty to
most Hungarians.  The reason for the high rate of heart disease is the
Hungarian diet in general.  I think that the how food is prepared, the most
common oils used for cooking, amounts eaten and overall ingredients make more
of an impact than if it as convenience food or not.

Of course, that's just my .02 cents worth. . .
