Possibly to use up an old store of apples before the influx of new apples from
the October or November harvest (depending on when the first frost came that
year).  An apple the size of an egg is kind of small, even for medieval
standards.  Could have been the "bottom of the barrel" so to speak.  But you
definitely must empty the barrel before putting fresh fruit into it, or you'll
suffer from "one bad apple ruining the lot".  Old adages usually do devolve
from common sense realities.
