Hello the list!

Herewith my 2 groats' worth on the art/science debate: I personally
think everything (including metallurgy, the example that was given)
is both an art and a science. Science is technically a philosophy of
research, and as such we use it to research what we do and how to do
it. When we have absorbed that to the point where it becomes
instinct, to my mind then it becomes an art. So when a wrought-iron
worker (iron-wreaker??) researches directions and follows them
religiously, I see it as using the scientific side of his craft.
When he is familiar enough with his craft to be able to devise his
own techniques and patterns, surely then he is at least as much an
artist as any calligrapher (who also has to go through the same
research and absorption techniques).

You don't have to agree with this; it's merely my viewpoint. But I
agree with Master A that it's probably best to call them crafts.
