I recall a National Geographic with wonderful pictures of a church 
carved within a salt mine in Germany.  Furnished and everything, and lit 
with candles placed within "lanterns" and windows as well as on ledges 
and alter.  I do not recall if it was made "in period" or made later but 
looked like medieval churches.
