The controversy on this issue still rages on. The person who repeated her
work and supposedly 'debunked' it, went into the islands long after Christian
influences were the norm in the islands and the people Mead had interviewed
were dead. I am convinced that Mead was correct and this other guy in fact
was told what he wanted to hear. :-) I have read both accounts and Mead still
gets my vote.

Agreed. This is true in not a few cases. OTOH, many dishes are made almost
exactly as they were then. For example, omelets, rice pudding and French
toast.

What are you using as a definition of scholar that differentiates it from an
amateur? Most of the major progress in many fields were done by amateurs.
Dinosaur studies, anthropology and archeology come immediately to mind.

<<if I offended you with some remarks or with some bad grounded
 facts. >>

No offense taken here. I am personally thrilled to engage in discussion with
someone who is as enthusiastic about medieval cookery as you appear to be.
Believe it is very refreshing to exchange ideas with someone who is trying to
be authentic as opposed to those who take little or no time to even try.

I would be very interested in reading this when you have finished it.

<<Elysande had the kindness of warning me about the high respected
scholars active on the list, and I repeat, it was not my intention to
polemize or question, I tried only to be helpful and share with people
who asked several recipes I believed was "period.">>

Well, the truth of the matter is that I'm just a grumpy old f**t sometimes. I
enjoyed your recipes and added them to my collection of regular recipes. They
sound great. :-) Your communications have been insightful and interesting. I
hope to see many more posts from you in the future. :-)
