Very interesting topic, indeed. The problem is we have a gap between
technowizards and humanists. Few librarian or archivists are active in
the developing of the new search- or cathalog engines. Its mean, the
technicians develop a new tool, they test it, they give away to the
librarian´s community, the librarians and archivists use it, and when
they want have support, the technicians have already left this tool and
are developing new ones. All the databases tools we are working with,
SQL-bases, Access-compatibles, File Maker-compatibles and so on, are
only good for storing, as in the old Rolodex, but they are
underdimensioned to do advanced searches and can`t manage the kind of
"conceptual" searching we need.
But if you go to the adress I wrote before, at the Maastricht Marshall
Macluhan Institute, they are the best in Europe in all these kind of
discussions.
