The same situation is clearly evident in the wine and spirits industry. They 
converted to metric early on but a pint means 375 ml. A fifth (e.g., of a 
gallon) is 750 ml. A half galloon of spirits is 1.75 l and a half gallon of 
wine is 1.5 l. A gallon of wine is 3 liters. Go figure. :-)
