I think it's a fine idea that you bring some food to help you cope with your 
food issues instead of demanding the cook do so.  Good for you.

Actually, it's not uncommon here for people to share tidbits with their 
table mates.  might just be leftovers from lunch (or the lunch they didn't 
have time to eat) or something brought specifically to share.  I think it 
makes the feast nicer.  Fills in the blanks when service is slow, makes the 
chance of having enough bread more likely.  So many cooks don't provide 
enough bread!  Lovely sauces and gavies and broths but nothing to sop them 
up with!
