It sounds as if this person is part of the history department?  Perhaps the
university archives would be more useful. I worked for a time at Stanford
University Archives.  SU's Department of Special Collections had a number
of collections "on deposit" from their creators/heirs/owners.  The
materials were cataloged & stored according to standard archival practice,
but the ownership & copyright expressly did not belong to Stanford.  At
least one collection went back to its owner when she went somewhere else.

If you are interested but there's no research archive at the university,
e-mail me off-list and I get a recommendation for you from the archivists I
used to work with.  If nothing else they should be able to help you get a
bulk-rate price for acid-free storage materials.
