This is actually fairly well known- a particular kind of geese near the
seashore was thought to have come from barnacles, and there was another
kind that grew from trees. Whether this was a fancy that was winked at or
truly believed, I don't know, but it turns up in a couple of places, one
of them some OE monastic documents, IIRC. Can't lay my hands on them right
now though.
