I forwarded my mother our discussion about making butter in jars, and she
sent me this in response...

Subject: Making Ice Cream
Here's a great idea to do with kids.
Take two coffee cans 1- 2# can and 1- 1# can. (Although we know they don't
really hold a pound)
Put 1 Pint of half and half
1/2 cup sugar, 1-1/2 Teaspoons vanilla and a pinch of salt in the smaller
can and put the lid on tight.
Put a layer of crushed ice in the bottom of the larger can and put the
smaller can on it. Pack with ice and rock salt (you could probably use
table
salt) around the outside of the smaller can to fill it. Put the lid on and
let the children roll it back and forth for 10-15 minutes. Remove the lid
carefully and check for firmness. If not firm enough you can put it back in
the larger can, repack it with ice and salt and roll it a bit longer.
Makes
4- 1/2 cup servings.
