SC - Egg shell colours

What you feed chickens does change the color of the yolks.

Our chickens were feed laying mash, cracked corn, and free range, and the
yolks were a deep orange color, the color of a sunset. Also the fresher
the egg the higher the yolk sits above the white.

As for what kind of chickens, we started out with rhode island reds and
white ones(the reminded me of foghorn leghorn), then somebody gave us some
bantam chickens and then soon they were heinz 57 chickens. We had a
tremendous number of them for a while something like over 100, but we had a
bad run of animals killing them, and we stopped having them.

My main summer project is to get chickens again. I don't want as many and
I probably won't let them run as free as they did. Letting them run all
over the yard is impractical even with the 8 acres we have. I haven't
really thought about what kind.
