Do you mean period as used in European cooking in Europe? Or as
cooked in North America in period? Actually from earlier discussions
here, I think the answer is: yes and yes.

However the cranberries you get here in North America are not the
ones eaten in Europe, although I believe they are similar.

Waverly Root in "Food" has comments about both versions. In areas of
Europe it was/is not cultivated but was gathered wild. Other names
in Europe include: karpolo (Finnish), tranbar (Swedish), canneberge
(French), Moosebeere (Germany).
