Oatmeal was invented in 1846, by someone who was trying to accomodate the
growing need for 'convenience foods'. Whole oats are steamed, flattened,
and dried to create a partially pre-cooked, faster cooking alternative to
whole oats. Whole oats were certainly eaten in period. On an interesting
side note, oats resist loosing their bran and germ, they retain their
nutrients through various forms of processing. Oats contain a natural
antioxidant that prevents them from spoiling on the shelf. The oat bran
contains soluble fiber, which dissolves into the bloodstream and helps
remove artery-clogging fatty deposits, lowers blood cholesterol, and is
generally good for you and your heart.
