MAR 19

Arts.

the Goddess of Trumpet Players.

St. Joseph's Feast Day (29) Patron Saint of Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Carpenters, Fathers, Happy Death, House Hunting, Mexico, Peru, Viet Nam,
and Laborers; Invoked against Communism and Doubt. Mary's husband,
Jesus' foster father. He became represented as the "Divine Cuckold"
until the Reformation when he was updated to be a more positive role
model. He was updated again as a more red-blooded blue-collar guy in 1933
and given a separate Feast Day to combat Communism and underscore May
Day. (See May 1). In many parts of the world, including the U.S., small
statues of Joseph are buried in the yards of houses up for sale in slow
markets.
Dia de San Giuseppe - Italy - Joseph is the Patron Saint of the Poor, so
in some parts of southern Italy the people invite the poor to a special
banquet. Families ask a man, woman, and a child to be their guests of
honor by representing Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. In Valguarnera those who
feel they have been particularly blessed by Joseph during the year may
also invite people to represent Ann and Joachim- the parents of Mary- and
sometimes all 12 apostles, too. After the feast, the orphans and beggars
portraying the Holy Family et al proceed through the town on mules,
receiving gifts from the townspeople.

Protector of all Workers. Mary's husband, Jesus' foster father,
carpenter. This feast day was added in 1933 to combat communism and
pagan celebrations of May-Day. See March 19th.

Party" by Christine Seelye-King

The below is from "Feast Day Cakes from Many Lands" by Dorothy Gladys
Spicer, copyrite 1960

"The entire Christian world celebrates March 19th, anniversary of St.
Joseph... But possibly no people remember the festival with more loving
detail than the Italians... St. Joseph's Day means a feast for the needy.
Everyone in the community contributes to the 'banchetto' or banquet,
according to his ability. The well-to-do provide money. Many of the
women prepare regional foods- minestrone, rich with dried beans and other
vegetables; or short pastries and fritters, fried sweets and cream puffs,
all named after San Giuseppe, who surely had a sweet tooth! ...
In many places little cream puffs, called 'Sfingi di San Guiseppe', are a
favorite Saint Joseph's Day treat. A commercial cream puff mix with
additions of characteristic flavorings make shells that are quick and
easy to prepare. Cottage cheese is an excellent substitute for Italian
ricotta.

SFINGI DI SAN GIUSEPPE
(Saint Joseph Cream Puffs)

Shells
1 package prepared cream puff mix, made as directed, with the addition
of:
1 tsp. grated lemon rind
1 tsp. grated orange rind

Bake into small cream puff shells. Cool, split, and fill with:

Filling
1 pound ricotta (or creamed cottage cheese)
1 Tbsp. grated orange peel
2 Tbsp. bitter chocolate, grated
2 Tbsp. sugar (more, if desired)
1 1/2 oz. rum or liqueur

Cream the cheese and blend thoroughly with other ingredients. After
shells are filled, dust with confectioner's sugar. For an extra party
touch, top each shell with a spoonful of chocolate frosting and decorate
with blanched almond half, a candied cherry, silver candy balls, or
slender strips of candied orange peel.
