The Germans refused to eat potatoes, thinking them a Spanish plot against
their lives. Their first were given to them green and still inedible --
upon eating them, they reacted and thought they had been poisoned. In the
eighteenth or nineteenth century, they were ordered to plant and eat them,
with the army enforcing the rule. They still refused. Finally a Prussian
king stood in front of everyone he could assemble and ate them without harm
to himself. After that, they became a staple of the German diet.
