Unlikely superstars in the classical music world, the Tallis Scholars have
earned an unparalleled reputation as the finest singers of Renaissance
sacred polyphony. Founded in 1973 by their current director Peter
Phillips, the 10-person English group derives their name from 16th century
English composer Thomas Tallis. Their March 14 program will be made up of
the music of Tallis' contemporaries and countrymen William Byrd, John
Browne, Robert White, and Henry Prentyce.

The Tallis Scholars have made over 30 award-winning recordings on the
Gimell label and toured the world many times over. In February 1994, the
Tallis Scholars were invited by Rome to the Vatican to perform in the
Sistine Chapel and at the historic Basilica of Sancta Maria Maggiore to
celebrate the 4ooth anniversary of the death of Palestrina. In 1987 the
group's recording of Josquin des Pres' Missa Pange lingua and Missa La sol
fa re mi won Gramophone Magazine's Record of the Year, the first ever in
its Early Music category to win that distinction.

The Washington Post observes: "Technically, the group is nearly perfect:
intonation is impeccable, the sound perfectly blended, the rhythm
rock-solidŠ All evening, the Scholars drenched the audience's collective
heart in joy."

Phillips, educated at Oxford, is in addition to his work with the Tallis
Scholars, an internationally respected scholar, broadcaster, author and
entrepreur. His passion for cricket rivals his passion for Renaissance
music, and Phillips writes a cricket column for London's The Spectator.
